9 out of 10 S. Koreans positive about new government


Seoul, May 19 (IANS): Almost nine out of 10 South Koreans gave a positive outlook for the new government under President Moon Jae-in, a survey showed on Friday.

According to the Gallup Korea poll, 87 per cent South Koreans forecast that Moon will do well in his management of state affairs during his five-year presidency.

Seven per cent showed a negative outlook, while 6 per cent refrained from replying, Xinhua news agency reported.

It was based on a survey of 1,004 voters conducted from Tuesday to Thursday. It has 3.1 percentage points in margin of error with a 95 per cent confidence level.

Moon's ruling Democratic Party gained 48 per cent of support, marking the highest-ever since the party was created. It was up 13 percentage points compared with the figure tallied before the election on May 9.

It was followed by the main opposition Liberty Korea Party and the centrist People's Party, which garnered an identical 8 per cent in approval rating.

The minor progressive Justice Party and the minor conservative Righteous Party also had an identical support rate of 7 per cent.
