Udupi, Apr 1: As much as 42 sovereigns of gold jewellery worth Rs 10 lac was stolen from the residence of a certain Rashida at Gopalpura, Santhekatte here on Sunday March 30.

Rashida had kept all her jewellery in a locker at Syndicate Bank, Kemman branch, as her husband works in a Gulf country while she was residing at Hoode. Rashida had brought the jewellery from the bank locker as she had to attend a wedding ceremony in her neighbourhood in the following week.

Rashida had been to Mangalore on Sunday morning and when she returned on the same evening she found the entrance door broken open. All the jewellery that was kept in a cupboard in her bedroom was missing.

Police suspect that some known people who knew that she had brought home all her gold jewellery from the bank locker might have committed the crime.

Sniffer-dogs that were brought to the spot were able to trace the culprits only as far as the nearby auto rickshaw stand, leading to a speculation that the theives may have got away by a car.

Brahmavar police have registered the case and investigations are on.
