Udupi, Mar 21: The untimely showers poured non-stop for an hour from 6.15 p m on Thursday March 20, uprooted an age old mango tree located besides Mangalore - Karkala state highway 13, just a kilometer away from the busy intersection of Padubidri on Mangalore – Mumbai National Highway 17.

Coastal district has been witnessing moderate showers since over a week. The age old trees dotting the NH 17 and state highway 13 are posing hazards to traffic as the highways are come under broadening works owing to increased traffic over the years.

The traffic towards Karkala was still hindered due to the uprooted tree with pile up of automobiles including passenger buses on either side, as the policemen from Padubidri led by SI Navinchandra Jogi are working through the night using earth movers to clear the age old tree.

The traffic policemen are diverting the traffic bound to Karkala through round-about route and slip road to access the NH 17.
