A youth who faked his own kidnapping and demanded a ransom from his family members has been detained by the police in Baheri village in the district.

Dinesh Kumar, 18, confessed to giving his family a ransom call under the guise of an abductor and demanding Rs 3 lakh after disappearing on March 14, Muzaffarnagar superintend of police Ashok Kumar told reporters here on Monday.

Police traced the phone call to Haridwar and detained Kumar, who had inflicted injuries on his hands to create an impression that he was actually kidnapped and harassed by the abductors, the SP said.

Kumar had taken a bank loan of Rs 3 lakh to start a mobile outlet and unable to repay the same, played the drama of his abduction, the official added.
