Fr Henry D’Souza, (58) has been the Executive Secretary of the CBCI Communications Commission for 7 years.

Earlier, he served as the Secretary, Proclamation and Communication Commission of Karnataka Regional Bishops’ Council (1989-2000).

Fr D’Souza was Founder Director of SANDESHA Regional Institute of Communications (1989 –2000) and Director of Sandesha College of Fine Arts, Mangalore (1996-2000).

Besides, he has been President of UNDA OCIC–India (Catholic Communicators’ Association), now Signis India (1986-1992) and Secretary, Signis - Asia (1989-1995)

Also, he served as Secretary of Mangalore Christian Council (Ecumenical, 1984-1994), Vice President, DARSHAN Film Society, Mangalore (1995-2000) and Secretary, Association for Communal Harmony, Mangalore (1991-1995).

Besides, he has edited and published titles on Church Communication, such as Catholic Communications in India.

The See of Bellary was vacant due to the passing away of Bishop Joseph D’Silva on Nov.17, 2006.

The Diocese of Bellary owes its initial growth to the Franciscan fathers. In 1928, the Holy See detached the two districts of Raichur and Gulbarga from the Diocese of Hyderabad and the district of Bellary from the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore and formed the new Mission "Sui Juris" of Bellary.

It was entrusted to the pastoral care of the Order of Friars Minor of the English Province. In the course of twenty years, its development was considered sufficient to be constituted as a Diocese in 1949 with John Forest Hogan, ofm, as the first Bishop.

The Diocese of Bellary now consists of the districts of Bellary, Raichur, Koppal and Davanagere all in Karnataka state.

Bishop Hogan was succeeded by another great Franciscan Bishop Ambrose Yeddanapalli, ofm.

Bishop Joseph D'Silva was appointed as the third Bishop of Bellary on October 27, 1992, by Pope John Paul II and took charge on March 9, 1993. He served the diocese with much dedication until his death.

On the occasion of the golden jubilee of the Diocese of Bellary and Yesu Krist Jayanthi-2000, a beautiful shrine of Mother Mary of Bellary cum Biblical Museum were built and dedicated.

The diocese has about 25,000 Catholics, 55 diocesan clergy and about 230 Religious men and women.

Our heartiest congratulations to Fr. Henry D’Souza, on getting appointed as the Bishop of Bellary Diocese. It is a great news for all, specially so, for all Barkurians. Two years in Barkur as Asst. Parish Priest,on his first posting after his ordination, young and energetic, humble and handsome, dynamic and humorous, talented and visionary, a true leader, Fr. Henry has influenced many and has been the idol for many young parishioners of Barkur, who have now attained higher positions in the society.

Fr. Henry, who then on has served in many senior and responsible positions in the organisations such as Sandesha, Signis India, Signis Asia, CBCI and others is truly, long deserving Bishop today, to shepherd more than 25000 faithful. And we are proud of him. On this occasion we wish him all the very best and pray God Almighty may grant him good health, strength and wisdom so that he may carry on with the work assigned to him in His Vineyard, in His way.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FAITHFUL OF BELLARY DIOCESE, The Good Lord has chosen a great person to be the Shepherd of your Diocese. During the few years I had the pleasure of being close to him, I have personally witnessed his great efforts to give a great leadership to the youth of Mangalore especially to those who were dedicated to spiritual music.

I can also never forget a tableau “Reach Out and Touch” which was played to a huge gathering around the year 1985-86 under his inspiration and guidance by the youth of the community. Bellary Diocese, especially the youth of the diocese will certainly be fortunate to have Fr.Henry as their Spiritual Head.

Indeed its a great joy to us Kinnigolians that one of our own has become the bishop. I still cherish the vocation-seminars he used to conduct in Kinnigoly and in the vicinity. I was then a raw seminarian, but well guided by his sessions and made strong. Kinnigoly has given more than 150 priests and sisters to the church in India and abroad.Though short in looks, he is tall in his reach to everyone. Bishop Henry congratulations.

    Sun, Mar 16 2008

The very name of Rev Fr. Henry D’Souza, inspires thrill to Barkurians. Why not, historical St. Peter’s Church, Barkur is the only parish in the whole of Mangalore Diocese fortunate to have his services as Assistant Parish Priest – May 1976, soon he was ordained priest – till May 1978. Secondly, it was Fr. Henry D’Souza who laid the foundation to the ever shining CYM of Barkur on 10th September 1976. We owe a great to this holy man as it was Fr. Henry again, who was the spirit behind the forming of now famous St. Peter’s Association Barkur – Bombay in 1988.

Once again it was Rev. Fr. Henry D’Souza who gave birth to ICYM Barkur Ex-Member’s Association Barkur in Dec. 2002. Today, we all filled with great joy and gratitude’s to Almighty Lord, as Rev. Fr. Henry D’Souza is chosen to be the Bishop of Bellary Diocese, Karnataka. We, congratulate and wish all the very best to Your Excellency, Rt. Rev. Henry D’Souza in your new assignment and pray for your good health and the Diocese and its people enrich with great divine qualities in you spiritually and materially in days to come. P.Archibald Furtado.
