Over 400 unmanned railways crossing closed in 2016-17

New Delhi, Mar 9 (IANS): Indian Railways on Thursday said that it has closed 438 unmanned level crossings across the country by February -- against the target of 300.

"438 unmanned level crossings have been closed up to February 2017 in the current financial year, by constructing ROB/RUB (Rail over bridge and Rail under bridge), against annual target of 300," the Ministry of Railways said in a tweet.

"This is a mission item as closure of manned level crossing (LC) improves mobility of road vehicles and environment besides improving the railway operation," it added.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley last month proposed to allocate Rs 131,000 crore as capital and development expenditure for the Indian Railways during fiscal 2017-18 and eliminate all the unmanned level crossings by 2020 -- one of the major reasons for train accidents in India.
