Bangalore, Mar 3: A constable on the night beat at JP Nagar police station died trying to apprehend two thieves in the early hours of Sunday.

30-year-old Nagesh was riding pillion on a ‘Cheetah’ motorcycle when the thieves, who were in a white Tata Indica car, knocked the police vehicle over.

The incident occurred between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. when one Vishwanath spotted two thieves stealing the wheel caps of his Maruti Zen Estilo car in JP Nagar II phase.

Vishwanath alerted the police control room, which contacted the 'Hoysala' patrol car on night duty. ASI Srinivas and constable Chikkalingaiah chased the culprits for 2 km. The ASI also alerted the constables on the ‘Cheetah’.

When the culprits reached Ambarish Park, constable Nagesh got off the two-wheeler and tried to stop them. The car hit the motorcycle, and Nagesh, who was trying to block their way. He hit his head on the road.

“We immediately rushed him to Rajashekar Nursing Home, where he succumbed to severe head injuries,” said a police official. Nagesh did not have injuries on any other part of his body.

DCP South division S Ravi said nobody had noted down the car's registration number. However, the police say it was a car with a yellow numberplate, which indicates it was a taxi.

Nagesh's family is in a state of shock. He had married a year ago and his wife is four months pregnant. The policeman, who was known for his good work, had pledged his eyes to a private hospital.
