Pakistan court issues bailable warrant against cop in Sarabjit case

Lahore, Feb 15 (IANS): A Pakistani court has issued a bailable arrest warrant against a top police official for not appearing before it in the trial proceedings of Indian national Sarabjit Singh's murder in 2013, media reported on Wednesday.

"An additional district and sessions judge on Tuesday issued bailable arrest warrants for deputy superintendent of Kot Lakhpat central jail," Dawn reported.

Despite repeated summons, the officer failed to appear before the court.

"Taking strong notice of the officer's conduct, the judge issued bailable arrest warrants and directed the Lahore CCPO to ensure appearance of the deputy superintendent on Feb 17," the report added.

Fellow prisoners of Sarabjit -- Amir Tamba and Mudassar -- who had allegedly torched him to death in May 2013 in Kot Lakhpat jail, had been indicted in the murder case.

Sarabjit, an Indian farmer who was held captive and eventually died in a Pakistan jail, had been sentenced to death for alleged involvement in a string of bombings in 1990.
