M'lore: Fr Muller Launches Gynecology Cancer Screening Week

Mangalore, Feb 17: Fr Muller Medical College will be organizing a programme on Gynecology Cancer Screening Week, here on Monday February 18 to Saturday February 23.

At the programme, the screening for cancer of cervix, breast and ovary, will be done with the state of facilities in the department of Oncology involving oncosurgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Cancer affects all communities worldwide, approximately 10 million people are affected each year and more than 6 million die each year. Among the Indian women, cancer of breast and cervix accounts for more than 60 per cent of cases.  Moreover, out of those who affected of cancer, more than 2 to 3 cancer patients are already in an advanced and incurable stage at the time of diagnosis. The screening and treatment at early stages can cure the disease, stated their press release.

Screening for Cancer Cervix

This involves annual ‘pap smear’ test for 3 consecutive years, in all women after onset of sexual activity. After 3 negative smears; Pap test should be done once in 3 years till the age of 60. Pap test is a very simple test which involves taking the exfoliated cells form the cervix and studying for abnormalities.

Screening for Breast Cancer

It is very important that the patients should be educated regarding self examination to detect at the early stage. It is necessary that an annual palpation of breasts should be done by a physician and after the age of 40, mammography will be needed. Due to the breast cancer nearly 3.7 lac death rate has been recorded worldwide and the only way to prevent deaths will be in detecting at the earliest stage and immediate treatment, stated their press release.
