Demonetisation bold, decisive step; to boost economy: Jaitley

New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI): Terming demonetisation as "bold and decisive" measure, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said it will have a multiplier effect on the economy and will create bigger, cleaner and real GDP.

"We are moving from informal to formal economy and the government is now seen as a trusted custodian of public money," he said while delivering the Union Budget 2017-18.

Demonetisation was a bold and decisive strike in a series of measures to arrive at a new normal of bigger, cleaner and real GDP, he said, adding that it has only a transient impact on economy and the long term benefit include higher GDP growth and tax revenue.

On November 8, 2016, the government had announced demonetisation of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes to crack down on black money and move towards a 'less cash' society through digital payments.

Jaitley said the government has taken a series of measures to eliminate black money and curb corruption and demonetisation was a step in that direction.

Demonetisation will help in transfer of resources from tax evaders to government, he said.

He further said that the pace of remonetisation has picked up and the situation will soon normalise.

Expressing hope that there will be no spill over effect of demonetisation next fiscal, the Finance Minister said the surplus liquidity in banks will lower the borrowing and the lending rates.

The government would continue with the economic reforms for benefit of poor, he added.

Demonetisation is bold move. Neither PMO or RBi know what is the success and outcome of it.

The Prime Minister's Office has refused to give information under RTI Act about decisions taken as part of the demonetisation plan. PMO has cited a provision of RTI Act claiming exemption from providing information.

Section 8(1)(a) of the RTI Act exempts from disclosure information which would prejudicially affect the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security, strategic, scientific or economic interests of the State, relation with foreign State or lead to incitement of an offence.

Information sought under Section 8(1)(g) would endanger the life or physical safety of any person or identify the source of information or assistance given in confidence for law enforcement or security purposes.

Repeated denial of PMO and RBI proves that demonetisation is failed attempt.

    Jai Hind

“While confidentiality prior to announcing the demonetisation decision is understandable, continued secrecy after its implementation is difficult to understand when people are facing problems due to shortage of cash.”

    Pam,

We are in a democracy, where citizens have the right to have their own preference as far as politics is concerned. However, India being a nation of mixed communities, I found BJP too harsh on non-Hindu population by saying (1) Hindu religion is too tolerant, yet propagating (2) Ghar-waapasi for those whose great-great-grandfathers may have been Hindus a century ago. How do you defend calling them back by enticing the facilities Hindus enjoy ? In other words, why others are inferior in comparison ?

BJP has not detached itself from RSS, an organisation that says 'all Indians are Hindus'. How any non-Hindu can feel safe under the banner of a party that does not withdraw itself from the influences of RSS ? Tell me, is it my fault that I am a non-Hindu today ? Tell me, how less patriotic can I be because I am not a Hindu ? True, there have been back-stabbers but such incidents were there in Hindu community too ! Are Hindus generalised to be back-stabbers, or aren't they hailed as national heroes no matter against who they did the (anti)heroics ?

I have repeatedly said that the day BJP openly declares that it will come to the aid of every single Indian irrespective of his/her religion, BJP have one more voter in me. Remember, upon my saying this very comment some time ago, I was asked 'who wants your vote' ? Therefore, its not me alone, there are 20% of non-Hindus who are hurt by this step-motherly treatment.

Do you want me to lay down points how BJP is Hindu-supporting and not so to other religions ? I am sure you don't want to go into that because the points will be too stripping and bitter. Hence, why I support a non-BJP party is for no other points than this.

Yes, I too agree that Congress can do much better than present leadership but changes will come, just as the they came into BJP when it transited to Modi from ABV. Congress will drift beyond dynasty politics, that's my faith and anticipation.

    Jai Hind !

    Dear Lydia madam,

Its beauty of our nation that we are living in mini world where one can see thousand of different sects of people with multiple language, culture, creed and religion.
Same time i want to point out a few before you which i felt worthy to highlight and satisfy you for small portion without glorying our self!
Sister did you ever seen a Hindu king invaded any foreign country, or massacred there? No right, but same time how many kings from other religion invaded many countries and committed heinous crime against humanity in which India too victimized. Ok we should not talk about past,Being in manglorean did you seen which area of manglore is much sensitive area?? as you said me too don't want to stripe more,by declaring the names of area? I believe you know the reason well?
Here what i want to say is no need to worry for RSS or any other sect of Hindu outfits, since culture, custom and way of life of their ancestors matters much.

    Pam Suvarna,

Are you a descendent of Rani Abbakka Devi ? Or the Vodiyars ? How does the dynasties ruled in the past and their not existing now affect you so much ? You talk about only India being conquered by outsiders, have you heard Kuwait invasion ? Korea being split into two with half the family in either part ? Have you heard that Australia is being governed by total foreigners while Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups are the actual inhabitants of the continent ?

Do you have knowledge about the extent of Samrat Ashoka's kingdom ? It extended as far as Madurai in the South and until Afghanistan/Iran. What do citizens of these places say ? That they were happy being invaded by the Samrat ?

Look lady, we are governed by a man who otherwise was responsible for the mass murders in Gujarat. What do you think descendants of those victims feel today ? Today, citizens of India are experiencing the exact situation as was existing during those days when kings went on wars/returned triumphantly. But nobody cared about what the citizens feel - got it ?

Therefore, lets not be affected by the history, lets teach peace and tolerance to our children, let love be the bonding agent, not hatred. And, remember, the history is same to me too, its not different to you and me. I am a born Indian like you, our religion shouldn't deprive me of the right to be sad/happy over any historical phenomena.

First of all it is not at Customs.. it is the serpentine queue in the bank due to the bad effect of demonetization. Common people have to bear the brunt of it!!! That's all...

I am sure, this did not happen to you and that's why it is not an issue for you. I know in Bajpe, near the church, there are 7-8 banks are there and you do ot have any problem.. What about others, who do not have banks close to their place and even if there is bank close to them, standing 5-6 hours is too much. Just think of ladies, elderly ladies, old people, sick people etc.

    Sachchidanand,

Imagine the financial condition of the nation faced in 1947 and where it sailed in the past 6 decades. Imagine if the financial situation Modi government had met with in May 2014, was equivalent to the one Congress took over in 1947. You should thank the skillful handling of the finances to successfully sail through (not one but) two recessions.

No, you guys are an ungrateful lot, not to understand how MMS dealt with the situation. God forbid - one such blow in future will let the world understand the proficiency of this adept bureaucrat. A bowl does not come full all by itself gentleman, it has to be filled drop by drop. No disagreement at all that there have been people took advantage out of their positions, but corruption is not reserved to just one party.

BJP is boasting about handling a full bowl that was kept ready by somebody else. We saw where just two months demonetisation took our economy. Wait for the coming year to see where the GDP reaches and how the food and industrial production functions !

    Ripesh,

You behave as if there hasn't been elections before 2014 ! Do you remember ABV government took charge earlier and could rule for just one term despite the population of India is 80% Hindu ? If you are thinking that BJP came to power due to educated people why ABV did not succeed to second term ?

At the same time, wasn't Karnataka ruled by BJP before this ? Are those all who voted Congress to power in Karnataka are/were illiterates ? Including you ?? eh ??

Stop thinking you alone are educated, at-least on this forum and be ready for questions shot at you if you comment stupidly !

Is India ready with another able person for the President's post when the present President's term ends soon ? No, nobody in the news so far. Why ? Because Modi has promised unopposed second term to Pranabada.

Well, this is my guess and that is exactly why the parrot is singing tunes in line with Modi's steps. Save my comment and read it again by July 2017.
