Mangalore: NIT-K's Technical Fest 'Engineer 2008' from Feb 14

Mangalore, Feb 14: Preparations are on in full swing for the biggest national-level annual technical fest 'Engineer 2008' which is being organized from Thursday February 14 and will end on Sunday February 17 at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NIT-K) in Suratkal. The fest will feature over 45 events covering various fields of engineering, informed a press release by Vaibhav Kabra the event convener.

Mangalore SEZ MD and CEO I S N Prasad will be inaugurating the fest on February 15 while on the February 16,  R K Shenoy, section head of BOSCH, India Operations, will deliver a lecture at NIT-K and will interact with participants. The theme of the event this year entitled 'Green Engineer,' will have as many as ninety colleges from across the country participating in the event. It is an opportunity for these "students from several disciplines to test the limits of their imagination, and match wits with the best and the brightest of the country," opined Kabra.

'Engineer 2008' will mainly include socially-conscious engineering events as well as environmentally-conscious initiatives undertaken to spread environmental awareness. The events will consist of a delightful mix of old and new in the field of technology. Also included are events with a focus on socially-conscious engineering like 'Shrishti', 'Rural Innovators', and ‘Fantasticity’. Signature events like 'Tech Speak', 'Inscription' and 'The Last Word' which continue to draw contingents of participants and observers and adding feathers to the 'Engineer' cap are mega ventures like 'TechNites'.

Given below is a brief note on the events:  

'Rural Innovators’ provides a forum for technology developed in India, of rolling fields and vast landscapes, to be brought to society at large. Innovation at the grassroots level is showcased so that it may spread to other parts of the country. 'Shrishti' encourages students to plan the efficient utilization of resources of a rural set-up.

'The Last Word' - a panel discussion on the topic "Social Responsibility - An Opportunity or Obligation?" involving eminent personalities like the TOI Lead India winner Rajendra Misra, CNN media personality Pallavi Ghosh, former Director of Dainik Jagaran Ajay Upadhyay and founder NID Dr Balaram is the unique feature of the event.  

Other highlights of the fest will be lectures and video conference series. The event provides budding engineers an opportunity to interact with the intellects at the frontiers of technology and people who have witnessed and orchestrated breakthroughs in the world of science. Prof Seth Lloyd of Quantum Computing fame from MIT, USA will talk about the promise of quantum computing and its giant leaps and Dr Paul Schuch (Chief of SETI, USA) will share his research on extra-terrestrial intelligence and the promise of life out there. Also there will be guest lectures from Prof Tim Poston.
 
At the fest there will be laser shows, tech product expo, UV light dances, musical fountain, Blitzkrieg along with  professional workshops on robotics, forensics, photography and aero-modeling will be attended by participants from all over India. The main sponsors of the fest are some leading corporate powerhouses like ONGC, GE, IBM, Thermax, JSW, De Shaw, Dell, Microsoft, Texas Instruments and Bosch.
