Udupi, Feb 13: A bitumen-laden tanker plunged into river breaking the railings of Pangala Bridge, located on National Highway 17, at 12.45 p m on Wednesday February 13.

There were three persons including the driver traveling in the tanker.  Initial reports stated that all of them have survived without any major injuries.

Bitumen-laden tanker plying from Mangalore fell into the river after its driver lost control while trying to avoid a marauding bus coming from the opposite direction on the accident-prone Pangala Bridge.  But well before the driver could regain his control, the tanker had broken the railings of the bridge and plunged into the river.

Eyewitnesses said that owing to the accident, bitumen that leaked out from the tanker was flowing in the river.  However, a major tragedy was averted since the tanker had landed by the banks of the river and not exactly fallen into the deep waters.

This bridge is a killer a cause of pain injury and loss since decades here we have witnessed many tragedies. RTO and police are blind? No they want such accidents to occur because they benefit from such tragedies yes must get bribe to release the deceased’s mortal remains! Agonizing is the National Highways Authority of India was It is responsible for the development, maintenance and management of National Highways entrusted to it and for matters connected or incidental thereto.

The Authority was operational in Feb, 1995. Local politicians may have never contacted National Highways Authority to repair this bridge which is in a dangerous curve and claimed many lives. Few months back the LPG tanker reminds us  the charred death of driver and the helper the scorched half acre coconut farm is witness.
