Modi faces opposition flak over bid to 'replace' Gandhi

New Delhi, Jan 13 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday came under intense criticism from the opposition over his picture "replacing" Mahatma Gandhi on the 2017 calendar and diary of the Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC).

IANS on Thursday reported about Modi's picture spinning the charkha donning the cover page of the KVIC calendar and dairy, instead of the iconic picture of Gandhi weaving khadi on a simple charkha, wearing his trademark loin cloth.

Opposition parties including the Congress, Left the Trinamool Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party were unanimous in slamming the move, asserting the "Father of the Nation" was "irreplaceable".

"It is most unfortunate that such a thing has happened. Nobody can replace Mahatma Gandhi. These sort of things do not define moral authority of the Prime Minister's Office," Communist Party of India-Marxist General Secretary Sitaram Yechury told IANS.

"I have just one word to express my anguish, it is atrocious," Communist Party of India veteran Gurudas Dasgupta told IANS.

The Congress dubbed the move "a sacrilegious sin" with party Vice President Rahul Gandhi taking pot shots at the Prime Minister.

"The Mangalyaan effect," said Gandhi posting the IANS story on Twitter.

Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said: "Khadi and Gandhi ji are symbols of our history, self-reliance and struggle. Removing Gandhi ji's photo is a sacrilegious sin."

"It is an irony that Modi is trying to get the symbol of non-violence from Mahatma Gandhi," he added.

Condemning the move, the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) demanded scrapping of the calendars and dairies carrying Modi's picture.

"We strongly condemn the decision. It is an insult to the Mahatma, our national hero, our inspiration. He is above all, and Modi is no match to him. KVIC should re-issue the calendars and diaries, with photos of Mahatma Gandhi," JD (U) spokesperson K.C. Tyagi told IANS.

"Mahatma Gandhi was the greatest leader of the 20th century not just in India but across the world. Nobody, no matter how important or high office he holds, can replace him. Any kind of comparison with the Mahatma is absolute sacrilegious," Trinamool Rajya Sabha member S.S. Roy told IANS.

Taking a jibe at the Prime Minister, Trinamool supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Twitter said "Gandhiji is the Father of the Nation. Modi ji what???"

The BJP-led Centre, however, tried to downplay the incident with Union Minister Kalraj Misrha asserting Mahatma Gandhi to be "irreplaceable"

"It is not that Modi has replaced Gandhi. The pages of the calendar are month wise and in just one page Modi's photo is there," said the Union Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister.

In 1918 Mahatma Gandhi started his movement for Khadi as relief programme for the poor masses living in India's villages. Spinning and weaving was elevated to an ideology for self-reliance and self government. Every village shall plant and harvest its own raw-materials for yarn, every woman and man shall engage in spinning and every village shall weave whatever is needed for its own use.

First for 'Swachh bharat' BJP robbed Mahatma Gandhi spectacles, printed one eye 'swachh' another 'bharath' making him blind.

Now Father of nation has been forcefully evicted by PM Modi from the pictures of 'Swadeshi movement' .

What next lathi, single drape, slippers? Is BJP is going the way of Hindu Mahasabha appeasing Nathuram Godse.

How come a person who wear's a of coat which costs Rs.Ten Lakhs, try to promote khadi and Khadi Village Industries Commission(KVIC)? Tomorrow the PM, might even replace Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan in all the advertisements they promote. He may also change the charkha on the national flag to Lotus, we will only have to wait and watch. Real joke to see the PM behind the Charkha.

    Albert,

You have given a very important piece of information. I too have to say something :

    Quote
"Gandhiji was not on the cover in 1996, 2002, 2005, 2011, 2013, 2016. While few of the calendars and diaries were blank, few of them had pictures of women working on khadi chakra. How can anyone replace father of the nation?"
    Unquote

Do you have any record that in the years you stated, was PVN, ABV, MMS or any other PMs serving ensured their pictures at the place Gandhiji's was ?

Indians should not be shocked or surprised by this development. The RSS/BJP's aim has always been to obliterate the memory and legacy of Gandhi from the hearts and minds of Indians.

Come on , Congress is no saint either. Biggest blunder in Indian history is brand name of Gandhi stolen by Indira and even passing it her son''s. What right a foreign origin lady Sonia has to suffix Gandhi with her name. Nehru and his siblings are surviving on stolen title of Mahatama Gandhi. A PIL should be filed in the supreme court against these thieves to shed Gandhi from their names .

Fekusim is now understood by all people and this will not last long. PM is not for dramabazi. Better focus on giving good food for the Jawans who are striving for our motherland day and night. I feel shame that Modi Govt has failed to give good food for our Jawans and for the past 65 year this has never happened.   PM who is still craving for petty publicity with NILL achievements in 3 years.
