Lucknow, Feb 5: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday accused the Maharashtra Government of having failed to check attacks on north Indians and demanded central intervention to protect their lives and properties in the state in the wake of breakaway Shiv Sena group targeting them.

"The Maharashtra Government should have taken steps in time to check the attacks on the north Indians living in the state but it has failed to do so", Mayawati told reporters here.

"The Centre should now intervene and ensure protection to north Indians", she said adding the attacks were in violation of the Indian Constitution.

"There is no restriction on the people of the country from living in any state", Mayawati said. North Indians, Chhath Puja, actor Amitabh Bachchan and Samajwadi Party leaders have been targeted by Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in Mumbai and some other parts of Maharashtra.
