Udupi, Feb 5: The inmates of sub-jail here resorted to fasting on Sunday, February 3, alleging that the prison officials are serving them watery curries, half-baked chapattis and to top it all, abusing them.

Sapla Anand, prison inmate hailing from Shimoga and other under-trial prisoners, while speaking to Daijiworld, stated that jailors and prison guards are torturing them both mentally and physically.  The wardens also abuse the family members of prisoners who come to visit them at the prison. Besides, the jailors resort to thrash the inmates when they plead to behave humanly with them.  Moreover, despite beginning their fast on Sunday, none of the jail officials cared to enquire after their condition.

Corruption rampant in sub-jail:

The prison accommodates 60 inmates. They allege that the wealthy inmates get everything from porn literature, ganja, arms and choicest of cigarettes by greasing the palms of prison officials.  The extreme inhuman treatment meted by prison officials drives a few inmates to commit suicide, stated some inmates.

Though the inmates voiced their grievances in the presence of jail officials, the officials did not comment.

If they want good and homely food, they must not do crimes that bring them to jail. Bad quality of food is also a type of punishment. If prisoners get good food, there is no meaning for prison life. But I insist that they be treated with more humane and just in accordance with prison rules and laws.
