5 killed in Pakistan shipbreaking yard blaze

Islamabad, Jan 9 (IANS): At least five people were killed and one was injured when a fire broke out in a ship parked at the Gadani shipbreaking yard in Balochistan on Monday, the police said.

Rescue workers were still looking for three people, while president of the labours' association claimed that the number of missing people was eight, the police said, reports Dawn.

In November 2016, 26 people were killed and 58 others injured in a string of explosions that occurred during work on an unused oil tanker at the yard.

Gadani is one of the largest shipbreaking centres of the world. It employs over 15,000 workers and two million others indirectly earn livelihood from it.

Due to lack of precautionary measures, accidents are reported regularly at Gadani. The workers are deprived of safety shoes, leather gloves, protective helmets, overalls and fire extinguishing equipment.
