Mangalore: Three Thousand Kites to Adorn City Skies on Jan 19-20

Mangalore, Jan 17: Team Mangalore, a hobby group of kite makers and flyers, will organize ONGC-MRPL International Kite Festival at Panumbur here on Saturday January 19 and Sunday January 20.

Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday January 16, Giridhar Kamath, Nitin J Shetty, Sarvesh Rao of Team Mangalore and Subhash Pai of MRPL said that the festival will be launched at 5 pm on January 19 by MRPL managing director R Rajamani. However, the flying will begin earlier at 2.30 pm.

After the inauguration dignitaries, patrons and sponsors will launch speciality kites. Deputy commisionner Maheshwar Rao, inspector general of police Ashit Mohan Prasad and NMPT chairman Tamilavan are expected to be present.

Flying on day two will also begin at 2.30 pm and conclude at 8 pm with colourful fireworks, following a brief stage function to felicitate the participants. The valedictory will be presided over by Maheshwar Rao. MRPL director (finance) L K Gupta will be the chief guest and superintendent of police N Satish Kumar will be the guest of honour.

Twenty one foreign kite-flyers from ten countries and fifteen Indian kite-flyers from five states will participate in the festival. Team Mangalore will also fly their speciality kites like Kathakkali, Yaksha and Bharat Nrithya. About 3000-4000 kites will be in the sky on the two days, they said.
