Udupi, Jan 15: In the presence of hundreds of devotees the ‘Three Chariot Festival’ was celebrated with traditional pomp and gaiety at Car Street here on Monday January 14.

The festival is a commemoration of Makara Sankranti.  The propounder of the ‘Dwaita’ philosophy Madhwacharya installed the idol of Sri Krishna in Udupi 800 years ago and from then onwards the day is celebrated as the auspicious 'Makara Sankranti'.

On this occasion ‘Utsava Murtis’ of Lord Krishna and Lord Mukhyaprana were carried to ‘Madhwa Sarovara’ (a pond in the premises of Sri Krishna temple) in a golden palanquin and it was then placed in a chariot shaped as a boat.

The chariots passed through the Car Street winding their way through the streets before stopping in front of Sri Krishna Math. The idols of the deities were then placed in a golden palanquin and carried to the Vasanth Mahal for offering ‘Puja.’
