One held with fake Rs 2000 notes, over Rs 4 lakh seized in raid

Bhubaneswar, Nov 22, (PTI) : In two separate incidents, Odisha Police arrested a youth on charge of circulating fake Rs 2,000 notes and recovered Rs 4.8 lakh stocked in the newly-introduced denomination post the Centre's demonetisation move.

Madhusudan Meher of Jharsuguda was arrested while he was trying to use the fake currency at petrol pump in Sunarimunda, a senior police officer said.

The petrol outlet staff handed him over to the cops.

"The note is a colour photocopy of an original Rs 2,000 currency. A case has been registered at the Jharsuguda police station and investigation is underway," Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Jharsuguda, Bijay Nanda said.

Meanwhile in Bolangir district, police seized over Rs 12 lakh from the house of a recruitment agent of migrant labourers, popularly known as 'dadan sardar' on charge of stashing huge amount of cash.

The police raided the house of Khirasagar Bag, a dadan sardar at Tingra village under Saintala police station limits last night and seized Rs 12,75,900, Bolangir SP Asish Singh said.

Singh said though they raided house of Bag on a tip-off about fake notes but the police could not find any.

Out of the total amount recovered, Rs 2,000 notes were also stored which totalled upto Rs 4.8 lakh, he said.

"The police were investigating as to how Bag could arrange so many Rs 2,000 notes while people stand in lines to get cash from banks and ATMs," Singh said.

Police suspected that the man was using local people to get demonetised notes exchanged for new the Rs 2,000 notes in different banks.

Bag, however, could not be arrested as he absconded before the raid took place, police said.

    Valerian D'souza,

I have said this before and i will say it again. By your logic it would be better all start using only 1 rupee note.

Almost all the people who are being critical of replacing rs 1000 note with rs 2000 note dont seem to really understand the reason behind it.

Let me explain, a note will be counterfeited no matter what, be it rs 1000 or rs 10000. now that that being said replacing rs 1000 with rs 200 note is kind of silly due to current inflation and rs 200 is be difficult to carry around.

But the real reason for demonetisation is to bring all the money out in the open to be accounted. now think what did the govt really do? they demonetized the 500 and 1000. They issued new 500 note and 2000 note. They told all the citizens to go to bank and exchange the money. now they have exact records how much money you have with you. Next you wont be able to buy anything unless its tracked by them. want to buy property? ok you can buy but from where will you pay? only through bank transaction. you pay all the applicable tax on it. same with the selling. No more stashing money in house. the it dept will track all the transaction and will know of any discrepancies.

Other thing is that most say is that it will help the people hording black money? But can you please explain how?

counterfeiting was done before and will continue into the future. The person receiving it needs to keep vigil when receiving the note.

Never ever I have said anything against demonetization. I always stood for it.
I can realize all the pros and cons of it. I don't believe in blindly supporting or opposing anything.
I criticized printing of Rs.2000/- notes and its timing which has put many of us into lot of unnecessary inconveniences which could have been avoided.
Even Govt, bankers wouldn't have suffered much of backlash by doing so.

    Valerian D'souza,

The main issue is that we want all things sorted out without any inconvenience. Thats why we are struggling behind.

Modi would have been advised by the top minds of our country regarding this matter. I dont think he would have take such a risk to his popularity he hw himself wasnt convinced.

I being a critical of modi before his election have made a drastic turnaround regarding my opinion of modi. Modi has a vision. a vision to make india a prosperous nation. I would never want Modi to loose next election cause that will derail the measures that he has implemented to put our country on a right track.

There are some who would say that i am a bakth, but the truth is that i have learnt to understand the politics and media a lot better than before.

Higher denomination currencies are always risky because counterfeit notes maker will find it cost economical.
Less the making cost, and higher the returns for them.
When currency notes are being rationed, what was the logic and necessity to print Rs.2000/- note? Instead Govt should have printed Note of Rs.200/-.
Counterfeit note makers will somehow print notes it's not a rocket technology!
Curbing the excess circulation alone can deter such production.
