Banks closed today; queues get longer at ATMs

New Delhi, Nov 14 (PTI): With banks closed in many parts of the country, cash-strapped people started making beeline outside ATMs from early morning but with limited success as most of cash vending machines are running dry.

Scuffle and heated exchanges were reported from ATMs and banks from many parts of the country. Many sections of the society including small traders, restaurant owners, transporters etc started feeling the heat as the dependence on cash is very high.

Banks are unable to service as heavy rush making it difficult to handle the situation. After government isued advisory banks have started making special arrangement for elderly and physically challenged.

In a bid to provide convenience to people, the Centre yesterday eased key restrictions including raising daily withdrawal limit from bank accounts and ATMs as well as increased the amount of old and now defunct currency notes that can be exchanged.

To augment cash supplies, newly printed hard-to-fake Rs 500 notes were also released in market. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday night announced the surprise demonetisation of higher denomination notes.

After a review by Finance ministry, the limit of old and now defunct Rs 500 and 1,000 notes that can be exchanged for freshly minted Rs 2,000 and a new Rs 500 notes was increased from Rs 4,000 to Rs 4,500 yesterday. Cash withdrawal limit at ATMs was hiked to Rs 2,500 from Rs 2,000 a day.

Shopkeeper says I need to buy atleast Rs.800/- worth material then only he will give me change. PM has put us in a mess. Our own money we cannot withdraw from our account for daily expenses.

Govt might be serious but this currency exchange is NOT wiping a single % of black money!!

Either the govt is total fool or it is fooling the citizens. Either ways nation is at loss.

People need denominations of Rs 10, 20, 100 and not just Rs.2000 currency notes. Railways and State Transport ticket counters are accepting Rs 1000 but returning the demonetised Rs 500 for the balance amount for want of lower denomination currency. Though these counters including petrol bunks are getting Rs 100 currency notes in large numbers the Rs 100 notes are disappearing from their cash box. To whom it is being laundered is not known. They are asking for exact change claiming they do not have Rs.100 currency notes. That is causing serious unrest amongst the common man whose daily routine is getting directly affected. Sub Post offices are not issuing any currency but are working as collection centres.

Reason to hurry the demonetizing is to gain Political advantage for B.J.P..after the demonetizing ..immediate we have U.P election...no way cash rich S.P & B.S.P will allow any third party in this state...so their cash drought will allow B.J.P a chance....winning U.P Means...win for R.S.S a Ram mandir within their reach....

You are not the member of implementation team. There may be Lakhs of similar incidents.
Because you like BJP & Modi does not mean that whatever they do is 100% right. Always try to analyse the situation in right perspective and not to throw you easy irrational way of convincing others.

What goes up has to come down and calm down. Jumping into action without trying to realize the repercussions? They took a bold and good step but with bad ground work or precautions. Its not surgical fight against the enemy country. What a bad preparation for the disastrous eventualities. Where are disaster management experts?
