Demonetisation: Despite govt claim of secrecy, scribe broke story a fortnight back

Lucknow, Nov 12 (IANS): Though the Centre has claimed that the decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes was known only to a handful of people, the story was broken by a Kanpur-based Hindi journalist almost a fortnight before the dramatic late evening announcement by the Prime Minister.

Brajesh Dubey of the Hindi daily Dainik Jagran is gleefully accepting congratulatory telephone calls and envious looks from his peers for his story of October 27 that also confidently reported that Rs 2,000 notes would be issued as replacement.

Talking to IANS over the phone, Dubey, who is on the business beat for the Hindi daily, did not reveal his source for the story citing the "ethics of journalism", but said it came from "informed and long-standing sources".

It was done routinely, he said, and did not draw attention even from colleagues, forget readers, until the November 8 "surgical strike" on black money -- an event that was so "top secret" that ministers were reportedly "quarantined" after the cabinet meeting where they were informed of the decision.

Dubey is happy now that the story has not only been confirmed by subsequent developments, but also that his byline has been noticed by the fraternity everywhere.

"It is a normal yet a good feeling to have filed a story which subsequently was confirmed by the announcement of the Prime Minister," he said.

Sources in the newspaper, however, contended that Dubey got a whiff of the coming event on the sidelines of the board meeting of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) -- the first under new Governor Urjit Patel -- which was held on October 20 in Kanpur.

Opposition parties have been accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of having leaked news of the impending demonetisation to those close to it.

The CPI-M on Friday accused the party's central leadership of compromising the confidentiality of Centre's decision to favour their party, claiming big amounts had been deposited in the accounts of its West Bengal unit in the days preceding the announcement.

"Just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement on November 8, an amount of one crore was deposited to a savings bank account that belongs to West Bengal wing of BJP. It clearly shows BJP was aware of the impending ban on higher denomination notes, well in advance," Communist Party of India-Marxist Politburo member and State Secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra told reporters.

However, the BJP has denied it had any prior knowledge about the demonetisation. On Friday, BJP President Amit Shah said at a press conference in New Delhi that the party had no information on the impending demonetisation. He said the information was "only limited to some constitutional and administrative" entities.

business has come to a stand still, marriages that have been planned long ago have been cancelled, burials of the dead have been agonising due to lack of funds. the common man has borne the brunt of hardships due to this demonetisation that has been badly mismanaged by the central Govt. Those responsible for this mess should be made accountable and shown the door.

No wonder politicians and businessmen are unperturbed by this decision and the BJP is taking credit for its success. Success for what? For helping fellow politicians and businessmen to convert black into white money? How can this announcement be a speculation by the media. It should be from well informed and reliable sources. Sad that the common man is under fire by this decision suffering to get back his hard earned legitimate money.

Only common man suffering otherwise nothing special going to happen. Govt will extend the exchange period from 31 Dec to 30 June 2017. By that time all the people including black money holders can exchange their currency and accumulate new 2000 rs. notes. Modi made it easy for storage of black money. No change all will be as it is. Relax...

A letter written by a modi voter

I voted for Mr. NARENDRA MODI. I celebrated when he got elected. I was proud when he was welcomed all around the world.. and then one day he came on TV and said and i quote " from tonight 500 rs and 1000 rs note will be not legal tender from midnight tonight".. excellent job Mr. Modi we are with you on this.

My first question is, that night 82 % of circulated money came to no existence. Money worth 14 lakh crore, how much money are you gonna inject back to the economy for cash transactions. If it is not at least 50% how will Indian economy survive next 6 months. I wanna see. First phase of this will wipe out small businesses and traders which consists of 13 percent of Indian population, selling basic commodities. Who pay tax but not what they should- reason -government doesn't do anything for them. 2nd phase will impact service industry.

According to an estimate 63 % people will loose job, retail industry will dry out for at least 2 years. Unemployment will increase 500% . Exports for any reason will not increase as we dont have production capabilities, Inflation will be all time high. Real estate market will crash for at least 10 years. Labour coming from small villages working in construction will have no job's. In short we as the nation got raped that night by our very own PRIME MINISTER.

People died as they didn't get medical treatment. Auto drivers, taxi drivers will not be able to pay their loans and will loose their source of income. Luxury market will no longer exist. Malls will shut down, restaurants will shut down. So the people who get their salaries in Bank accounts please stop celebrating, because you are next. We pay enough in-direct tax to develop and sustain india. India doesn't run on straight economy. We run on parallel economy. Reason being if we pay tax to actual value prices will increase, so will our income. Look at the level of income tax we pay, if every citizen of india pays 5000 rs one time as tax- it is enough for india to sustain for 9 years. There are a lot more models to clean black money and cut corruption.

In short no one is out of this crisis. "MR. MODI aache din aagaye" come out and see the celebration on the streets with us. Hats off to you sir. you can control Media, but people will not stay quiet for very long. I choose to wipe toilets in a foreign country then live under your government. We are a democracy not a dictatorship. So stop being one.. and people please wake up and fight for your rights!! Stop praising and think about it. Educated Indian!!
