Supreme Court issues contempt notice Justice Katju

New Delhi, Nov 11 (Agencies): The Supreme Court has issued a contempt notice to its former judge Markandey Katju for a writing controversial Facebook post.

Justice Katju had said that the  Supreme Court had "erred in law" by reducing the sentence of the convict in the 2011 rape and murder of 23-year-old Soumya in Kerala.

The court had asked him to appear before it on Friday to explain his views.

The court said it was issuing a contempt notice as Katju's remarks were an assault on the judges and not on judgement.

The Supreme Court had recently commuted the death sentence on Govindachamy to 14 years in jail, saying there was no evidence that he had murdered Soumya.
