GST must be implemented by Sept 2017: Jaitley

New Delhi, Nov 11 (DHNS): As differences persist between the Centre and states over right to levy taxes, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday spelt out the outer limit for implementation of the Goods and Services Tax regime.

“GST has to be implemented by September 16, 2017, and if it is not implemented by then, then the states will not be able to collect their share of taxes and hence there is not enough scope to further delay the decision,” Jaitley said addressing the Economic Editors’ Conference here.

At the same time, Jaitley said the government was aiming to rollout the new indirect tax regime by April 1 next year.

The GST Council – which has representation of all states and the Centre – has been unable to reach a consensus on dual control on taxation rights and sharing of revenue.

However, Jaitley appeared unperturbed over questions on the GST Council possible failure to reach a consensus at an informal meeting convened on November 20 to thrash out pending issues.

In 2011, when the Congress-led UPA government introduced the Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill in the Lok Sabha, it set the deadline of April 2012 for the rollout of the new indirect tax regime.
Two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled states, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, red flagged the reform legislation that aims to stitch together a common market by dismantling fiscal barriers between states. It is a single national uniform tax levied across the country on all goods and services.

GST for ‘one nation, one tax’ would have inducted into service by Apr 2012 if BJP didn't oppose it?

Now BJP should explain to the nation, why national interest is not accounted when they are in opposition?

BJP is directly responsible for all those delays passing of GST bill.

Implementing GST in the middle of the year will result in accounting complications. Then its better to implement it in 2018 instead of sept. 2017
