Archbishop Seeks Prayers for those Affected in Orissa

Panaji, Jan 6: Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao of Goa and Daman has appealed to all the Catholics and people of goodwill of this Archdiocese to observe a week-long prayer for peace and inter-religious dialogue in the Kandhamal district of Orissa.

"As it is known, beginning December December 24, 2007, there have been unprovoked and serious communal disturbances in that district, resulting in the burning or destruction of about four hundred Christian homes, nearly sixty churches, six convents, six hostels, two seminaries and one hospital," Goa Church spokesman has said in a press note released here.

He has said that in union with the Church in the rest of the country, the parish priests and religious superiors in this Archdiocese have been asked to "conduct prayers during regular Parish Masses and to organize special prayer services - Holy Hours, Night Vigils, etc. - in our Churches as well as the recitation of the Rosary in families and church institutions, from Sunday, January 6 to Sunday January 13, as an expression of our solidarity with our Christian brethren in Orissa and for the restoration of peace in the riot-affected areas."

    I fully agree with you Mr. Leo Fernandes. It is true that Mr. Modi, the CM of Gujarath was very much upset when Gujaratis in Kenya were attacked by the tribal Kenyans. He made a very big noise and the Indian media gave a very big publicity for that. The Kenyans had not killed any Gujathai and not destroyed any of their temples or places of worship. We should not support any violence from any group.

    But the Same Modi had organised the killing of more than 2000 Muslims in his own state some years back. When Hindus in Malaysia were attacked the Indian Govt made a big noise. But our Government does not take any action against the Sang Parivar thugs who have attacked, destroyed hundreds of churches, convents, schools etc, and killed many Christians in Orissa. This shows the Sang Parivar is so powerful that they can wipe out the minorities with their cowardly criminal acts.

    The Central and State Govenments are not protecting the minorities, especially the christians, who are just 2.5% of total population of India. The TV channels have not shown all the facts about the carnage in Orissa, as we all know that the owners of all the TV channels in India are sympathetic to the criminal organizations like the Bajrang Dal and RSS.

    Things are very bad for the minorities in India. God only should protect us and punish the fundamentalist Hindu organisations (and their sympathisers) who are openly attacking the people belonging to the minority faiths.

    Along with the prayers,Archbishop Ferrao should force the government for funds to replicate the destroyed churches,convents,hostels,seminaries and one hospital along with four hundred or more christian homes.This should be highlighted on and off on TV news channels,the atrocities committed. When Indians(gujarati)died in Kenya,the political force got up to rescue their kith and kin.
