Petition seeking elevation for Pakistan Army chief dismissed

Islamabad, Oct 21 (IANS): The Islamabad High Court has dismissed a petition seeking the status of Field Marshal for Pakistan Army Chief General Raheel Sharif.

The Dawn newspaper on Friday quoted Justice Aamer Farooq as saying that the court lacked the jurisdiction to direct the legislature in this regard.

When the judge asked the petitioner's counsel if there was any law under which the federal government might be asked to elevate Gen Raheel to Field Marshal, he said the government might make a new law for the purpose.

Justice Farooq said: "No direction can be issued to the legislature to legislate a particular law." The order said the petition was without merit and so dismissed.

Gen Raheel's three-year term is set to expire on November 27.
