Beltangady, Jan 1: In a very bizarre and sad incident on the last day of the year, a son hacked his father to death at Udane near here on Monday December 31 afternoon.

The murdered has been identified as Shivappa Gowda (58), a resident of Baremelu Kodanchi House in Rekhya village near here. He was brutally murdered by his eldest son Balakrishna (26) on Monday.

Shivappa Gowda was talking with his second son who is in Bangalore over the phone from a STD booth at Udane when Balakrishna hacked him with a scimitar. The incident took place in broad daylight and when the locals present at the spot tried to stop Balakrishna he threatened them that he would hack them too.  Balakrishna hit Shivappa on the neck and head owing to which the latter died on the spot.

Meanwhile the shop owner Kamalaksha pulled the shutters of the shop down denying any chances of escape to Balakrishna.  Sources said that once Shivappa died, Balakrishna called his brother in Bangalore and told him that he had murdered his father.

Nelyadi police, who immediately rushed in to the spot, arrested the accused red-handed and took him to police custody.

Shivappa Gowda was an agriculturist by profession and had three sons among whom Balakrishna was the eldest one.  His two other sons are working in Bangalore.  Balakrishna had recently married to Umavati and has one child.  He was a driver by profession.  But owing to his addiction to alcohol, seldom he used to work.  He had regular fights with his father over several issues.

Family sources also said that he had brought the scimitar from his house and had even told his mother Akkamma and wife Umavati that he will hack his father to death.

Nelyadi police have registered a case in this regard.
