Mangalore Nov 25: The times group inter-school Times NIE Funfest -2007, held as part of the Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme went off to a gala start here at Town Hall on Saturday, Nov 24 filling the hall with laughter, fun and cheer by over 1,000 students.

General manager RMD South India, Franklyn James inaugurated the function. Students of Raj Academy, Ganjimutt – Wilsha and Siri sitting atop a horse as part of cheerleader team, with their act were the show-stoppers of this event.

Various competitions were held, eye-catching amongst which were the vegetable-carving one. Vegetable Ganesha by Karthik of Sri Vyasa Maharshi Vidya Peetha, Mulky was the most noteworthy one, drawing stares of several visitors. Also on displaying were varied floral decorations created by talented students as part of the flower-arrangement competition, making a statement of creativity.

In addition to all these competitions, there was other bouquet of events such as different types of fancy dress competition in which were seen students depicting gods, demons, jokers, ‘paanwallah’, scare crows all vying for the top honours. Moreover, a creative writing competition on short-story writing for junior level too was organized. The topic was ‘The night was cold and the screams were getting louder…’ Another segment had a poetry writing segment with the theme ‘The soul takes flight’ for the senior category.

One more competition was that known as the ‘Colour Splash’ painting competition. This had juniors working on the theme ‘My city of joy’, expressed realistically. Many of them focused on the concrete jungle. Seniors on the other hand tried their hand at painting the future under the theme ‘My India 2020’. Some paintings depicted Indians passion towards the latest version of cricket viz., T-20 while another portrayed India as being in safe hands.

But the most popular event turned out to be the ‘Indian dance’ which had the maximum participation and was divided into ethnic/non-filmy and film hits/Indipop. The prizes were distributed by Denis D’sa administrator head of Fr. Muller Hospital. Senior manager RMD, Navaneeth Shetty was also present at the event.
