Tim Kaine accepts Democratic nomination for VP

Philadelphia, Jul 28 (IANS): Virginia Senator Tim Kaine on Wednesday night officially accepted the Vice Presidential nomination on the second day of the ongoing Democratic National Convention (DNC).

"I humbly accept my party's nomination to be Vice President of the US....And can I be honest about something? I never expected to be here," NBC News quoted Kaine as saying.

A day after making Hillary Clinton the first female major party presidential candidate in US history, delegates to the DNC approved her Vice President pick by voice vote in a departure from the usual protocol.

Amid a mix of applause and protests, the chair declared the motion approved with the support of two-thirds of the 4,763 delegates, EFE news reported.

Kaine, 58, was mayor of Richmond and Virginia governor before being elected to the Senate, where he has served on the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees.

He is fluent in Spanish. He also spent working with missionaries in Honduras.
