Former tribal insurgent leader shot dead in Manipur


Imphal, July 5 (IANS): Hmar National Army leader Lalthanshang Hmar was shot dead on Tuesday in Churachandpur district of Manipur, police said.

Some unidentified persons barged into the former insurgent's house in Hmar Veng shortly after midnight and slashed him with a sharp-edged weapon in the face before firing at him.

After the assailants left him for dead, Hmar was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours.

His outfit was one of the underground Manipur organisations that opted for suspension of their insurgency, allowing former insurgents to came overground. 

On April 21, Ningombam Nabachandra, a former chairman of People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, and his driver were killed inside 7 Manipur Rifles camp at Khabeisoi in Imphal east district.
