Veteran Congress leader Uma Shankar Mishra dies


Lucknow, July 4 (IANS): Veteran Congress leader Uma Shankar Mishra, who had been in charge of many an election campaign of the Gandhi clan from the Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh, died on Monday.

He was 92 and unwell for some time. 

The news brought hundreds of Congress members to his home in Rae Bareli to pay their respects to him. 

Mishra came in close contact with the Gandhis in 1951 when he worked with Feroze Gandhi in Nehru's son-in-law's campaign from the Rae Bareli constituency in the first general elections.

He later acted as campaign manager for Indira Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Arun Nehru, Sheila Kaul and Captain Satish Sharma, all Congress candidates from Rae Bareli at different times.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, daughter of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, is expected to arrive at Rae Bareli on Monday evening to be with the bereaved family. 

Sonia Gandhi is the current representative of the Rae Bareli constituency in the Lok Sabha.
