India joins MTCR as full member

New Delhi, Jun 27 (PTI) : India today joined the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) as a full member and said its entry would be mutually beneficial to enhance global non-proliferation norms.

Marking India's first entry into any multilateral export control regime, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar signed the instrument of accession to MTCR in the presence of France's Ambassador-designate Alexandre Ziegler, The Netherlands' Ambassador Alphonsus Stoelinga and Luxembourg's Chargé d'Affaires Laure Huberty.

"India has joined the MTCR this morning...India's entry into the regime as its thirty-fifth member would be mutually beneficial in the furtherance of international non-proliferation objectives," External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

"India would like to thank each of the thirty-four MTCR Partners for their support for India's membership. We would also like to thank Ambassador Pieter de Klerk of The Netherlands and Mr Robert Steinmetz of Luxembourg, co-Chairs of the MTCR," the statement said.

The MTCR Point of Contact in Paris has conveyed the decision regarding India's accession to the regime through the French Embassy in New Delhi as well as the Embassies of The Netherlands and Luxembourg, it said.

India's entry into MTCR comes days after it failed to get NSG membership due to stiff opposition from China and a few other countries.

Significantly, China, which stonewalled India's entry into the 48-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) at the just- concluded Seoul plenary, is not a member of MTCR.

Since its civil nuclear deal with the US, India has been trying to get into export control regimes like NSG, MTCR, the Australia Group and the Wassenaar Arrangement that regulate the conventional, nuclear, biological and chemicals weapons and technologies.

MTCR membership will now enable India to buy high-end missile technology and also enhance its joint ventures with Russia. The aim of the MTCR is to restrict the proliferation of missiles, complete rocket systems, unmanned air vehicles and related technology for those systems capable of carrying a 500 kilogramme payload for at least 300 kilometres,

    dear arm ksa,

I dont want to give any advise or make you understand the situation. 2 days back pak militants killed our 8 CRPF jawans. we should have our self defence system. every time we need not to depend on any other country. MTCR will definitely benefit India. only pak will be worried by this development.

By reading the comments of some people in this forum I feel these people's hatred towards Modi is greater than interests of country. These people should be ashamed to be Indian.Whatever political differences we have ,we should love and support nation interests by keeping aside our differences. Some political parties specially AAP & Cong celebrates NSG failure. It is not Modi's failure ,it is India's failure.Modi tried really hard to get NSG entry and most countries agreed and he succeeded in convincing most of the countries. No one praised his efforts instead celebrating failure.R these people are really Indians ?.Some political parties leaders not participated in yoga day also to show their hatred ness towards Modi. Grow up Pseudos don't show your intolerance towards nation development works.

This is great news and was expected. India''s inclusion into the MTCR is much more important than that of NSG. This is also a great success for the foreign policy of the Modiji government.

If you're educated enough understand MTCR continue reading. Hope you'll understand what a common man's benefits...

Becoming a member of MTCR, India can easily acquire missile technology from other countries. That help India to advance its missile technology.

Despite having advanced in other defense technology, India still behind our rival nations in missile technology. Our only supersonic 1000km missile, Nirabhya is still under development, only 1 success in 3 tests.

Our most hyped "Brahmos" range limited to 290km because of India's not being member of MTCR so far, now the range of Brahmos can be increased.

India can develop/ have or acquire predator Drones from other countries like USA/ Israel/ Russia.

Tomorrow, when Pakistan or China attacks India, our advanced technology missiles stops attacks. That's what a common man's benefits.

What ever you educated people say I do not understand. What I understand is 3 Times Food, Good Job, Decent Housing, affordable Medical Facility and Good education System. Range of "Brahmos" Nirabhya will not help me it will help Ambanis who are investing in defense. So keep your education for your self, tell me how it will improve the life of Aam Admi. I do not want Mr. Modi to give ultimatum for Tax Payment, and then invest in improving the life of corporates.
