Jail riot leaves one prisoner dead in Muzaffarnagar


Lucknow, June 24 (IANS): One prisoner was killed as violence broke out in Muzaffarnagar jail on Friday as two groups of prison inmates fought pitched battle inside the high-security prison.

One of the prison inmates - Chandrahas, who was serving a life sentence was killed in the rioting. He was beaten to death, officials told IANS.

Heavy police reinforcements were rushed to contain the rioting in Barrack 3 and the situation continues to be tense. 

Uttar Pradesh has been witness to heavy rioting inside its jails in the past few months, with prison officials and prisoners being brazenly attacked.
