14 Taliban militants killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, June 24 (IANS): At least 14 Taliban militants were killed and five injured in clashes that erupted between Tehreek-e-Taliban and Afghan Taliban in Afghanistan's Kunar province, officials said on Friday.

Clashes erupted between both the groups on Thursday, Khaama Press reported.

The militant groups have not commented so far.

Infighting among the Taliban groups intensified after the announcement of Taliban founder Mullah Mohammad Omar's death last year.

The group has split into different factions since Mullah Akhtar Mansour succeeded Mullah Omar last year in July.

One of the main dissident Taliban group leader is Mullah Rasoul who opposed the appointment of Mullah Akhtar Mansour as well as Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada as new Taliban supreme leaders.

Akhundzada succeeded Mullah Mansour after he was killed in a US drone strike in Balochistan province of Pakistan last month.
