No decision on India's NSG membership as China remains adamant

Seoul, Jun 24 (PTI) : The plenary meeting of the 48-member Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) ended here today with no decision on India's membership bid as divisions persisted over admitting non-NPT members with China leading the opposition to it.

China's stand that India's membership application cannot be considered because it has not signed the Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT) was backed by nearly 10 other countries which effectively torpedoed India's bid although it had the strong backing of the US, the UK, France and a majority of countries in the nuclear trading group.

Earlier, the chief Chinese negotiator, Wang Qun continued to vehemently oppose India's membership of NSG.

Wang, Director General of China's Department of Arms Control, told reporters that there was no consensus on the NSG membership of non-NPT countries like India.

He insisted that for a country to be a member of NSG, signing of the NPT "is a must". This rule has not been set by China but by the international community, he added.

Wang warned "if exceptions are allowed here or there on the question of NPT, the international non-proliferation will collapse altogether".

Asked about reports that Beijing was blocking India's membership, he said the NSG has so far not agreed to any agenda item on participation of non-NPT countries. Therefore, there was no point of China supporting or opposing India's membership.

The anti-India stand taken by China again today clearly shows that Chinese President Xi Jinping has not responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's urgings in Tashkent yesterday that Beijing should support India's case.

Seeking China's support for India's membership, Modi had urged Xi to make a "fair and objective" assessment of India's application which is before the Seoul plenary as the two leaders met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

there are many ways to teach a lesson to china.eventhough a official ban on chinese goods cannot be imposed.anti dumping duties and specific commodity bans can be imposed on china.recently britain and usa imposed anti dumping ban in chinese steel.we can also used heavy red tapes for chinese investments whi aredesperatly trying to invest in india as currently chinese economy is in downturn and india is the only attractive destination for the world to invest bcoz of its stability and is majorly immune from global recession.remember china is a commodity exporter and a export dependent econmy and any setback in it will severly imact its declining economy.china has started this game and india will finish it.modi/doval are smart players and they will do the needfull to china from hereon.

USA statement ON INDIAS NSG MEMBERSHIP after todays NSG plenary session in Seoul today

    QUOTE:
The US today said that there is "a path forward" for India to become a full member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group by the end of the year, hours after
the group's plenary meeting ended in Seoul with no decision on India's membership in face of strong China-led opposition.

"We are confident that we have got a path forward by the end of this year," a top Obama administration official said.

"It needs some work. But we are confident that India would be a full member of the regime by the end of the year," the official told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Refusing to divulge the discussions and opposition to Indias membership within the 48-member grouping, the official said details of the internal deliberations are confidential.

Chinese are supposed to be Permanent members of U.N..

But instead of being role models they simply Gobble up small nations on their way.they annexed 90,000 sq miles during Nehru's time..now Tibet..now South China seas..now whole of African continent in their hands Milking the continent of precious metals..mines.. oil/gas paying pea nuts to the Africans.. and building infrastructure from Sea ports to the mines for direct ACCESS to harvest precious metals.
now they do not want India in..
    why?
Must boycott china..while you admire their Growth..
because we should have indians in india and not sending the LOOT to be under holy places and in foreign banks..
while they manage frugallyand make things happen nder Command and control
Even their ministers are shot dead or imprisoned for corruption.
while in India it is a must TO loot otherwise he is not qualified?
    a Joke.???

Boycott China? How does that supposed to happen? On one hand we are opening 100% FDI and at the same time we don’t want Chinese investment? In 2015 alone at an investment of $870 millions, China has increased it’s investment by six folds from previous year in India. International trade and politics aren’t governed by emotions and sentiments that you have expressed in the first paragraph, they are governed by intelligence and wise strategies. Had boycotting China been that simple, US would be the first one to do so. But the reality is China owns 8% ($ 1.26 trillion)of US debt which makes them the biggest creditor of US. Or in other words, China has got the superpower over a barrel and this was possible because of the wise strategies deployed by China.
    Vhe Vhe Vhe!

    In 2014-15:

India’s exports to China: USD 12 billion.
India’s imports from China: USD 61 billion.

A whopping five times worth of goods are imported by India when compared to its exports to China.

The 2015-16 will be far, far worse for India.

As if this is not enough, the "Make In India" PM has allowed the mammoth statue of Vallabh Bhai Patel to be "Made in China".

Most Indians would think that India could have used the trade difference to arm-twist China.

But that won't happen. Why? The Gujarati traders - whose lion's share of business is all about importing the Chinese goods and distributing in India - will be unhappy.

If the "Make In India" PM has a choice to make: the interests of the Gujarathi traders or the NSG support from China.

Which choice is he going to make? You guess.

indias membership is slated to be considered at next nsg plenary session to be held in december 2016.this session is used as a platform by india and usa to judge which couuntrie are supporting india and which are not.switzerland, italy, mexico and south africa were opposing indias membership earlier but due to modi govts hectic diplomacy these countries have agreed to indias membership.brazil is a surprise opposition as it is a member of brics.total 6 countries out of 48 member NSG group are opposing and they are newzealand, turkey, austria, brazil, ireland and china.that means 42 countries are supporting indias membership.other 6 countries will be made to agree by december 2016 by india and usa combine by invoking strategies of caoxing, cajoling, threat and intimidation(like trade sanctions, importing duties on thier goods etc).all in all india will get membership by december 2016 as this session is to see who opposes indias membership.
there is a proposal by usa to change the rules of nsg itself by the december 2016 that makes merit and history of non proliferation of nuclear weapons mandatory and not signing NPT which makes india eligible for NSG.india has already got membership of MTCR (missile tech control regime) 15 days back where india can get access to critical missile technologies.when countries like usa, whole of europe, russia, japan supports india, then indias entry is a foregone conclusion and is just a matter of time(few months).

This in fact is a step backwards to US in it's efforts towards subduing Chinese dominance in this region. Our Rock star was used as a pawn in the game even without his knowledge. The much hyped 5 counties tour in 140 hours gone with the end. In corporate world a failure of this magnitude would attract deluge of pink slips, but in political world it's likely to attract more trips in order to maintain good bilateral relations with those 47 out of 48 countries at least until 2019.
