New Delhi, June 21 (IANS): From the world's highest battlefield to its largest ocean, soldiers and families from the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force observed International Yoga Day by performing Yoga exercises in thousands on Tuesday.

At Siachen, at an altitude of around 5,700 feet above sea level where oxygen is sparse, against the backdrop of snow clad peaks and glacier, troops in their special white suits performed different asanas.

Soldiers also performed Yoga at Pangong Tso, a saline water lake in Ladakh that extends from India to China, and in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh and other forward areas.

The Indian Navy observed the day with its personnel performing Yoga on ships, as well as at Naval stations across the country.

Yoga was also performed on board INS Viraat, a Centaur-class aircraft carrier, as monsoon lashed Mumbai, and a rainbow flashed in the background.

Navy personnel also performed Yoga on other ships, including INS Cheetah at Port Blair, INS Airavat which was out at sea, and other ships stationed from South Korea to the Pacific ocean.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar observed the day with army troops from the Red Eagles Division and NCC cadets in Kanpur.

The Indian Air Force organised Yoga events at its bases across the country, including at Old Willingdon Camp at Race Course in Delhi.

Indian Coast Guard personnel also observed Yoga on board their boats.

The UN General Assembly had declared June 21 as the International Yoga Day following a resolution moved by India and co-sponsored by a large number of nations.

The first International Yoga Day celebration was organised in June last year.
