Government lying on extradition of Lalit Modi, Vijay Mallya: Congress

New Delhi, Jun 20 (IANS) : The Congress on Monday accused the Narendra Modi government of lying on the issue of the extradition of Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya and said the government has "no intention" of bringing the two back to India.

"Modi government doesn't want to get back Lalit Modi or Vijay Mallya. The government has been lying that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had sought extradition of Lalit Modi from the External Affairs Ministry. This was made clear by the External Affairs Minister yesterday (Sunday)," said senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, newly-elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday said that her ministry will seek extradition of former IPL chairman Lalit Modi and industrialist Vijay Mallya, both in Britain, once it receives revised requests from the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

"In November 14, 2015, for the first time a statement came from Finance Ministry's enforcement department that they were seeking the extradition of Lalit Modi. Again on May 27, 2016 ED made a statement that they were seeking the extradition of Lalit Modi," said Ramesh.

"Yesterday (Sunday) Union External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj in a statement said that ED has not sent us extradition request on Lalit Modi. This means there has been no request to External Affairs Ministry on Lait Modi's extradition from ED department, which comes under the Finance Ministry. This makes it very clear that this government doesn't want the extradition of Modi," he added.

Mallya left India for Britain earlier this year with more than Rs 9,000 crore of outstanding dues to 18 Indian banks. A non-bailable arrest warrant has been issued by a Mumbai court against the business tycoon.

The ED is probing Lalit Modi and other executives associated with IPL since 2012 for alleged violation of anti-money laundering laws.

"Swaraj also said in her statement that there are some gaps in the extradition papers of Vijay Mallya? What are the gaps? Can't the ED make the request for extradition properly?" Ramesh asked.

Nobody is accusing her of “requesting” the British government to issue travel documents for Lalit Modi. The question is why did she deal with the Lalit Modi appeal clandestinely without informing the government and her own foreign secretary. Or India’s own high commission in the UK. Given his legal problems and her own family’s long professional history with the man why did she not recuse herself from the entire affair? She’s caught in an unenviable position. If she thought there was nothing untoward in Lalit Modi’s humanitarian request, why the secrecy and protocol deviation around it? And if she thought there was something untoward then why did she do it without bringing the other players in government into it?

The PM Modi government which want to clean the system extend 'humanitarian aid' who is defaulter in foreign exchange violation case against a Rajasthan-based firm said to be owned by Lalit Modi which involves alleged illegal routing of Rs 21 crore funds from a Mauritius-based company?

In Vijay Mallya case the nationalised bank d he is willful defaulter. How does a willful defaulter is allowed to own and bid in IPL team?

Why Lalit Modi and Vijaya Mallya both violators of Indian law is given special preferences?

She is party of 'Aunty corruption'.

Then what is the difference between Cong and the communal/Feku party....Let the communals prove their worth by catching the looters, instead of giving Bhashans.. Then the public will appreciate it... If the Fekus continue with throwing the questions, then it is proved that cong and Fekus are the two faces of the same coin....

Chota Modi and Mallya Maam are the main source of Election funding for BJP in 2019.

Bada Modi has already sealed this 100% FDI deal while he was in Europe.

Now you understood why FDI is so important for BJP.

@hemanth, bangalore: read newspapers regularly to know the fact. When Lamo left India he did not went with suitcase full of money but went out BEFORE his IPL corruption came out unlike Mallya who left AFTER he failed to pay the money he owes to banks. What Aunty Soosamma did is met Lamo personally and helped in humanitarian ground (in return to her husband and daughter getting so called fee) but an Indian envoy has to go out from a function when he spotted VM among the audience. Soosamma had no problem to meet up with a known fugitive of India and her Master and friends had no problem in meeting another fugitive that India wanted named Dawood Ibrahim. What's your opinions mate about this??

Mallya exit is sheer negligence....Remember there was Nadeem of the Nadeem Shravan Music director duo...He too ran away after killing of Gulshan Kumar

One Gora, Chief of Eveready too exited India in 1985 after Bhopal Gas tragedy....One Italian QUATORACCHI also was helped to flee India after BOFORS...

If we think that government is worried about bringing back Lalit or Vijay ...we are wrong. Government is only worried about their existence and their own personal benefit. It was same in congress and it is now in BJP. We are fools to support these two parties...!!!???

This BJP govt is liars of top rank. History will judge, how one generation got fooled by people, despite having information very much accessible to them.

Every qualified, proven, expert in the field gets anti-national tag if he wont lie as BJP's political bosses want. Why? Just to make sure their brand of lie-fake-half truth prevails.

As long as people like Arnab Goswami is there, who desperately try to cover BJP for its every failure and try faulting on the opposition, it may delay a bit.
But, country's young generation will loose dearly.

forget Sushma Swaraj. think about the ruling govt which influenced, approved and favored Mr. Vijay Mallya to take Lump-sum amount of Loan through different Banks. Mr. Mallya has paid generous amount of Commissions to the Bank authorities and Political leaders back then.
Mr. Mallya alone is not the defaulter. People who received his commission too should be sacked. surely there will be involvement of FM back then. was the ruling govt (Sonia govt)sleeping when this was happening? now why blame Modi govt.
