Indian arrested in Zimbabwe for rape not a cricketer: MEA

New Delhi, June 19 (IANS): An Indian national was arrested over rape charges in Zimbabwe but he is not a cricketer, official sources said on Sunday.

Sources in the Ministry of External Affairs while refuting media reports that an Indian cricketer was involved in an alleged rape case in capital Harare said, "We have spoken to our Ambassador to Zimbabwe. The report is totally false. No Indian cricketer is involved."

However, a source revealed that "an Indian affiliated with one of the sponsors has been arrested".

"He has also denied the charge and said he is ready for a DNA test to prove his innocence," the source added.

Local media in Zimbabwe on Friday reported that an unnamed Indian cricketer was arrested for allegedly raping a local woman in Harare.

The Indian cricket team is in Zimbabwe for T20 and One-Day International (ODI) series.
