Jun 14 (Agencies) : All states except Tamil Nadu have agreed on the Goods and Services Tax or GST, which aims to bring the country under a unified tax regime, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitely said on Tuesday.
Jaitely met finance ministers or their representatives of different states in Kolkata in a conference called to evolve a consensus on the contentious GST Bill, which has been in stalemate for years.
The Kolkata meeting was held at the initiative of Mamata Banerjee, who has thrown her weight, behind GST. The Central Government now hopes to introduce the bill, which has already been passed by the Lok Sabha, in Rajya Sabha, where it is in minority.
