Banned militant group's leader arrested in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Jun 14 (IANS): Bangladeshi police on tuesday morning arrested a top militant of banned Jamaat'ul Mujahideen Bangladesh group, police said.

"Top JMB leader Garib Ullah was captured in a forest in Mymensingh district," Xinhua news agency quoted a senior police official as saying.

Garib Ullah was a close associate of Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, a top JMB leader who was executed in 2007.

The arrest was part of the ongoing anti-militant drive that began on Friday.

Against the backdrop of a new wave of rising militancy, Bangladesh last week launched the special drive aimed at dismantling terrorist outfits and their networks.

Over 8,000 persons, including 119 suspected militants, have been arrested in the first three days of the drive.

Among the 119 suspected militants arrested in the three days, most are reportedly members of the JMB.
