Bengal government to open fair price vegetable stalls

Kolkata, June 11 (IANS): In order to check rising food prices, the West Bengal government will sell vegetables at fair price stalls after procuring them directly from farmers, a minister said on Saturday.

Under the new scheme Banglar Fasal (the crop of Bengal), the government will procure vegetables directly from the farmers and sell those to people at fair price stalls to be set up across the state.

The initiative will keep a check on rising prices of essential commodities by removing the middlemen.

"The first stall will come up on June 22 in Barrackpore, in North 24 Parganas district. We will gradually take it to other parts of the state," said Cooperation Minister Arup Roy.
