India gets Mexico's support for NSG membership

Mexico City, Jun 9 (IANS) : India's hopes of entering the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) brightened as Mexico extended support to New Delhi's membership to the exclusive club during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the country.

"President Enrique Pena Nieto @EPN says Mexico supports positively and constructively India's membership of the NSG," tweeted External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup.

Modi thanked the Mexican President for the support.

The Mexican support comes just in time as the 48-member NSG has called an "extraordinary" plenary meeting on Thursday when it is expected to take up for review India's application for membership to the elite club that regulates global nuclear trade.

India submitted its application in early May to become a member.

On June 6, Switzerland, an important member of the NSG, extended support to India's membership in the group during Modi's stopover in Geneva.

India also got strong backing from the US for NSG membership with President Barack Obama extending support during Modi's visit to Washington on Tuesday.

Both Switzerland and Mexico had earlier expressed strong reservations on India's application for becoming a member of the elite export control regime due to India being a non-signatory of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

India has already got the support of major NSG countries, including France, Russia and Britain.

China, a major NSG member, is still holding out, citing that India needs to sign the NPT.

India has not signed the NPT on the ground that it is discriminatory.

Pakistan has also applied to become a member of the club, and is being backed by China.

The US has been trying to convince China to support India's bid, and US Secretary of State John Kerry was in Beijing to try and get round China's reservations on supporting India.

When celebrating progress on NSG and MTCR, thank Manmohan Singh and the Indo-US nuclear deal.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) opposed the Indo-US nuclear deal, tooth and nail. When he became Prime Minister, Narendra Modi hailed the Indo-US nuclear deal as the centerpiece.

If it really happens its Good news for India. But bad news for Cong and its supporters, The hype would be too much that people mite introspect who to vote for. One more dent in the already sinking ship of Cong. Will Poojari call a press conference to opine & debate on Mexico support and NSG.

Not just that Naveen haters wants Indias entry into NSG is scuttled by china. they are praying hard that good does not happen to India during Modis tenure. such is their hatred. If finally India is not able to make it and the news comes in the media, these negative mentals will suddenly come of the at holes and remark sarcastically.

if USA has decided to to admit India in NSG and UNSC,then it is just a matter of time.India already got entry into Missile Technology Control Group(MTCG) yesterday.47 members of NSG have agreed out of 48 members.Switzerland and Mexico had some issues.Modi visited these 2 countries and they have also agreed.china will be tackled by USA by showing the threat of international trade sanctions and heavy duties on its goods.chinese economy is already sliding down and if more sanctions are imposed on it by USA/Europe ,it will slide to bottom which china also knows.china has to blink blink. It is just a matter of time.

one more point to add.china had applied for membership to 34 member MTCG in 2003 but its application was rejected as it had allegation on it that it had transferred nuke tech to north korea and pakistan etc.now india is this group and china is not.this group is very important to get in for buying critical tech related to missiles.now china cant get entry without indias approval to this group.china is desperately trying to get into this group but was rejected every time.that means india has chinas juttu in its hand and it can bargain this opportunity for nsg and unsc.hahaha

..MODI's efforts should be appreciated, now we have more countries supporting us on NSG..but its very difficult to get NSG membership considering CHINA friendship with pakis, veto power and USA long history of double cross with friendly countries..at present USA trying to use INDIA against CHINA..considering CHINA support to pakistan even on terrorism , its better to have some support from US to irritate/contain CHINA..
