India set to contribute as new engine of global growth: Modi

Washington, Jun 8 (PTI ) : Observing that the world needs a new engine of growth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said India is poised to contribute as the new engine of global growth and asserted that a larger Indian economy has "multiple benefits" for the world.

"This is the time when the world needs new engine of growth. It would be nice if the new engines are democratic engines," Modi said in his address to the American business community at the annual gala of the US India Business Council (USIBC).

"Today India is poised to contribute as a new engine of global growth. A larger Indian economy has multiple benefits for the world," the Prime Minister said as he listed out the achievements of his government in economic reforms and liberalization of policies.

As a result, India has now emerged as the one of the fastest growing economies of the world and urged the American businesses to come and invest in India, set up efficient manufacturing units.

"India is much more than a market," he said, adding that it is a "reliable partner", as he listed out the key features of a resurgent Indian economy that is geared to become "driver of global economy".

The Prime Minister said that a larger Indian economy has multiple benefits for the world.

The Prime Minister said as India marches ahead on the path of development, it needs to learn from the America experience, in particular its entrepreneurship, technological advancement and products which ranges from drugs to drones.

"Indeed, to me America is not just has a great past, but it is a country with an exciting future," the Prime Minister said.

Modi exuded confidence that Indo-US partnership would benefit both the countries.

Modi said his government has taken decisive steps to curb corruption."We would continue to have disciplined and prudent macroeconomic policies," he told the US corporate leadership.

"We would continue to improve the investment climate and ease of doing business," the Prime Minister said, adding his government wants to make India a destination which not only welcomes businesses but also it is easier to do business.

Modi urged developed countries to open their market. "We see this as a win-win situation," he said.

He assured the US corporate world to make its taxation system transparent. India, he said would continue to open up the defence sector.

"We are exploring a simpler and transparent licensing system. The purchase of six nuclear reactors from Westinghouse which would mark a new era in the field nuclear energy in India," the PM said.

Clean Ganga campaign is on the verge of taking off. It is a high priority of the Modi government, he said, adding that his aim is to restore Ganga to its pristine glory.

"We have begun our journey to transform India," he said, adding that this would transform the world and other countries also.

I strongly recommend the Indian government to shift tourist modis office to USA... exactly opposite to Facebook's H.Q.

I also request USA to grant him a green card so that he can live happily in his home town - New Jersey.

Only a Gujju can understand the pain/trauma/frustration associated with the US Visa denial for 10 long years. Now that he's got it, intends to maintain it at any cost, especially after retirement. But the question is will the new prez be as friendly/cooperative as Barrack? Of course he/she will be so long as he continues his shopping trips (this time it's Predator drones and 6 nuke plants) But if the international oil prices regain their past status, then shopping will have to be curtailed unless the desi common man is forced to shell out 100 bucks for a liter of petrol. Of course bhakths wouldn't mind as they consider this a prerequisite to Achche din and superpower status.

He's busy lubricating overseas engines by placing more and more purchase/business orders. This time apart from Predator drones, there'll be orders for 4 nuclear power plants with US. This is the net outcome of visits. Agreed, we need development but not outright purchase. Look at real superpowers US, Russia or China or any other developed country, they all exports surpass imports. We, at a per capita of 1.5k$, rank 141 out of 186 countries. And we talk about contributing as a new engine! Just hollow talk and no substance. But then that's what the moronic 31% loves!

Even super powers also passed from this stage only brother. Its not that they suddenly jumped to super power position. Modi has not told we are super power now, read the news properly. It clearly says "India is set to contribute as new engine of Global growth". It means it just started to contribute for global growth. I know you cannot digest what happened in US during Modi visit. Whole world knows how India is accelerating dont need your certificate for Modi's contribution.

Raj, apart from DW, I've gone through reports in TOI, CNN and NYT. I've not mentioned anywhere that Modi said that we were superpower. I think it's you who should go through my comment again. As Raguram Rajan said at 1.5k $ we are still a poor economy. Modi's efforts should be boost this number by increasing exports which have deteriorated ever since he took over and that has resulted in weakening of our currency. He, instead of boosting exports, is on a shopping spree which of course fetches him a pat or two on the back and you guys' joy knows no bounds. Believe me. if not for the low oil prices, with this kind of shopping spree value of Rupee would've touched 3 digits a dollar.
