New Delhi, Jun 8 (DHNS) : A day after Ajit Jogi announced a new political outfit, the Congress on Tuesday welcomed his exit saying it had saved the trouble of expelling him.
Even as it celebrated the former Chhattisgarh chief minister’s exit, the Congress was battling disgruntled leaders in Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Uttarakhand and Tripura.
“It is good riddance. Jogi has saved his the trouble of expelling him from the party,” AICC General secretary B K Hariprasad told reporters here.
However, it cannot adopt the same posture in Maharashtra, Meghalaya and Uttarakhand where Congress leaders have been disgruntled with the central leadership for lack of “corrective steps” after the party’s continued electoral losses.
In Maharashtra, the central leadership has launched efforts to reach out to AICC General Secretary Gurudas Kamat who sprung a surprise on Monday with his announcement of “retirement from politics”.
Congress sources said senior leader Ahmed Patel has been tasked with the responsibility to reach out to Kamat.
“I categorically reject reports that he (Kamat) has resigned from the party. He was, is and will always remain part of the Congress family,” Congress’s chief spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said.
In Meghalaya, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has been facing dissidence since his wife Dikkanchi Shira lost the bypoll for the Tura Parliamentary seat last month.
Former chief ministers D D Lapang and S C Marak have met the Congress’s central leadership with a demand for changes in the state, including a cabinet reshuffle to tackle anti-incumbency. In Uttarakhand, where the Congress thwarted the BJP attempt to topple Chief Minister Harish Rawat, fresh trouble has broken out over the nominations to the lone Rajya Sabha seat.
