Trinamool's Sonali Guha, Rezzak Mollah granted bail

Kolkata, May 4 (IANS): Trinamool Congress candidates Sonali Guha and Abdur Rezzak Mollah, against whom the Election Commission had initiated police cases, were granted bail by courts in West Bengal on Wednesday.

The EC had initiated a police case against Guha, contesting the assembly polls from Satgachhia in South 24 Parganas on April 30 after she was caught by TV cameras instructing over phone to "beat and drive away the CPI-M agent".

Mollah, a former state minister, was facing legal action over his "objectionable" remarks about the BJP's actress-turned-politician and poll contestant Roopa Ganguly.

The EC issued a show-cause notice to Mollah, contesting from Bhangar also in South 24 district, over his comments against Ganguly.

Dissatisfied with his reply, the poll panel on April 21 initiated the police case against him.

While Mollah was charged with outraging the modesty of a woman, Guha, who is also the deputy speaker of the West Bengal assembly, faced charges of disobeying the orders of a public servant, interfering with the electoral process and criminal intimidation.

Both Guha and Mollah appeared before two courts in South 24 Parganas which granted them bail on personal bonds.
