Imphal residents warn of general strike

Imhal, May 3 (IANS): Local residents on Tuesday warned of a general strike if the state government failed to provide the post-mortem report of a person found hanging in Lilong.

Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh had sought two days to hand over a copy of the post-mortem report of Sagolshem Prasanta, who was found hanging in Lilong, away from his home at Singjamei on April 24.

Police said on Tuesday that another person from a valley district was found murdered in Ukhrul district.

The body of Jayenta Sharma, who hailed from the chief minister's hometown, was found on Monday.

Police said they suspected foul play in the death of the daily-wager. No arrest has been made in the case so far.

Meanwhile, border trade was affected as local residents continued to block the trans-Asian highway.

Activists in the Imphal East district began to lock up government offices from Monday to demand investigation in the murder of Pittaranjan Sharma from the district in Ukhrul district on April 24.
