Pope Francis tells teens 'happiness not an app'

Rome, Apr 24 (Agencies) : Happiness is not an app you can download on your mobile phone, Pope Francis told thousands of teenagers on Sunday at a mass to mark a weekend dedicated to youth.

"Freedom is not always about doing what you want. In fact it is the gift of being able to choose the right way," he said in a homily punctuated by regular bursts of applause from the crowd on a packed St Peter's Square.

"Your happiness has no price. It cannot be bought and sold: it is not an application you download on a mobile phone. Even the latest version cannot help you to grow and become free in love."

An estimated 70,000 teenagers were in Rome for a weekend of events to celebrate Francis's Jubilee year dedicated to the theme of mercy.

In a surprise move on Saturday, the 79-year-old pontiff heard confessions from 16 of them and a video message from him was broadcast at a rock and rap concert in the Stadio Olimpico.

One of the teenagers chosen to confess to the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics said she had been trembling as she approached the chair on which the pope was sitting in St Peter's Square.

"But as soon as I sat down I had the feeling of being next to a normal person rather than the pope. Francis is really one of us," Anna Taibi, 15, told La Repubblica newspaper.

The Sicilian teenager said she had been touched by Francis's tenderness as he listened to her confession.

"I expected him to give me a penance ... instead he absolved me and let me go."

The importance of mobile phones to contemporary teenagers was also reflected in Francis's message to the concert.

Clutching an iPhone, he told his audience that living without Jesus was like not having any signal. "Always be sure to go where there is a network: family, parish, school," he said.

A very meaningful message for today's teens from our beloved Pope.

His heart is full of compassion and his words are very carefully expressed, with the intention of bringing about a change in society.

There is certainly no quickfix solution for teenagers/youth to gain happiness. Happiness can only accrue, if their friends and family members treat them (teenagers) with respect and understanding, but without compromising on moral values.

Apps are after all, apps, but can no doubt add value to a normal, happy lifestyle.

Christianity is not for sale. It is thrown open freely & if any individual wants to become a follower of Christ is wholeheartedly received into the fold. Those who always blame us for conversions are empty vessels & they have failed miserably to substantiate their claims.

    DEAR Shankar, Mangalore

Pope, me and you are human beings.

Mistakes, errors, and sin is committed by humans. Even prophet committed mistakes, errors and sinned. I agree this Pope is most liberal. It doesn't mean he is out of errors and mistakes.

Pope Francis is one of the elite human beings the world has seen in the recent times. His words not only makes the best ever Pope, but also a human being class ahead.

“If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” is what he said about homosexuality.
When a transgender asked him if he has got a place there in church, the Pope just embraced him.
He said efforts to convert people into Christianity is “ solemn nonsense”. The people around here who go on hunting people for conversion have to listen!
He is soft on women undergoing abortions, they can confess and get back to full graces of church.

Every religion has to grow broad minded in order to bond people with faith. Shirdi Saibaba was one who professed unity of Hindu and Muslims as early as the beginning of the last century.
One Shankaracharya criticizing the followers of Saibaba looks so tiny in front of modern, humane, broad minded Amma, Pope Francis and Sri Ravishankar.

    Dear Shankar, Mangalore

Women were made for men and Men for Women.

A man cannot marry a man and have genealogy.
A gay and Lesbian cannot have genealogy and hence they ask adoptions.

    IS IT NOT A REDICILOUS.

I quote yours: “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” is what he said about homosexuality. Unquote.

Read in the Holy Bible In the Genesis chapter 19 Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed because they were all gay. Except a few of them could have been counted in the finger were saved.

I quote yours: He said efforts to convert people into Christianity is “ solemn nonsense”. Unquote.
If we were converting we would have were 80 percent in India and not mere 2.3 percent.
People just embrace Christianity out of their willingness and heart desires.

    @Shankar, Mangalore
    - All people sin and all must repent and come to Christ, the fount of life, peace and eternal salvation
    - Even if the Pope refuses and mocks the authority given to him by Christ, Our Lord Himself will judge the sinner(s) and the Pope(s)
