Udupi, Oct 11: The inaugural function of the Model United Nations (MUN), organized by Manipal Institute of Technology, (MIT), was held here on Wednesday, October10.

Chairman of Prasar Bharati, M V Kamath in his speech, while making a pertinent point on United Nations Organization (U N O), opined that the associate organizations of the U N O such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO), United Nation’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) were doing more good work than the Security Council of the United Nations.

In this context Kamath accused the Security Council of the U N of being totally under the control of the United States of America (U S A).

Going back in time and referring to his distinguished media career, Kamath informed that he had served as the U N correspondent of the Press Trust of India (PTI) for a lengthy period of time. He urged Indian leaders to stop desiring for a permanent seat for India in the Security Council. The other countries had to literally go pleading to the permanent members of the Security Council to give their vote in their favour, he stated.

Kamath further informed that soon after the U N O was set-up, India was offered a seat at the Security Council, but the then PM Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, rejected it guided largely by his idealism. Moreover, he stated that as of now things are not going in the right direction at the U N O and if the present trend continued, it would also go the way of the League of Nations, he cautioned.

The welcome address was given by Ayush Prasad. The function was also graced by the deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj, Institute director S S Pabla, joint director P K A Muniswaran, secretary general of MUN Namrata Sharma.
