Mangalore, Oct 3: Gandhi Jayanthi was celebrated at Gandhi Peace Foundation in Tagore Park here on Tuesday October 2.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Narendra Rai Derla, Kannada professor in Bellare Government College said that Gandhi is slowly vanishing from the hearts of the people as well as from the society.

Dr Derla further said that earlier Gandhi was equivalent to India. Speaking about him was like speaking about our country and speaking about India was equal to speaking about Gandhiji, he added.

But today the situation is totally different from earlier days, because many have forgotten Gandhi owing to modernization, Derla lamented.

He further said that today India stands opposite to Gandhism and Gandhian way of life. What Gandhiji had opposed during his life time is being practiced by India now, he added.

Talking about Gandhism and Gandhian way of life, Derla said that India today stands for all that Gandhiji opposed during his life time.

He further said that Gandhi always supported farmers and traditional agriculture, where the farmers were self dependent. But today farmers are often neglected, he lamented.

He further urged people to follow and practice Gandhian principles.

K Purushottam Shetty, president, Mahatma Gandhi Peace Foundation and Octavia Albuquerque, honorary president were present.
