Mangalore, Oct 1: In the wake of an altercation between the supporters of independent candidate Hayaz at ward 5 in Chokkabettu in the suburbs and those of JD (S) candidate Iqbal in Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) polls on Sunday, the police arrived in time before it could explode into a major problem.  The policemen have taken into custody both the candidates, besides posting KSRP force at the location.  The situation has returned to normalcy by late evening.

This incident occurred in a cross road located in front of Junior College in 5th ward at Chokkabettu.  The trouble flared up when the supporters of both the candidates were engaged in an argument over the possible outcome of the civic body polls in their ward.  The verbal exchange threatened to burst into a major tension.

However Suratkal police sub inspector T R Jagannath and KSRP personnel arrived on the spot and managed to disperse the mob by caning.
