Mangalore, Sep 24: Additional director general of police Shankar Bidari told newspersons here on Sunday that the police set-up in Mangalore would not be upgraded to the commissionerate level in the near future.

He drew attention to the rule which lays down a yardstick of a minimum of 10 lac population for a city to be granted a police commissionerate. The last census had showed the population of Mangalore as 5 lac only. So the only way was to wait for the next census.

As for threats to businessmen from underworld dons, Bidari said the matter had engaged the serious attention of the government, however, no one need harbour any fears about such calls.

He added that the credit of nabbing the culprits of the Chemmannur jewellery heist in Bangalore is entirely of the DK police. The department has decided to give them a cash prize of Rs 10,000. Investigations are in progress in the case, he further said.

Tight security for polls

In view of the local body polls in the state, suitable security arrangements have been made all over, Bidari said. In DK, out of the 567 polling booths, 146 have been notified as highly sensitive, 235 sensitive and 186 as ordinary booths. The arrangements include pressing into service of 58 police vehicles, 13 platoons of district armed reserve (DAR), 8 KSRP and 356 home guards.

In Udupi, out of 149 booths, 6 are regarded as highly sensitive, 73 sensitive and as 70 ordinary ones. The security involves pressing into service of 18 vehicles, 6 DAR, 3 KSRP and 100 home guards personnel.

In Chikmagalur, out of the 233 booths, 120 are highly sensitive, 102 sensitive and 9 are regarded as ordinary, he added.

IPG western range A M Prasad, district SP Satish Kumar, Udupi SP Dr A Subrahmaneyshwar Rao and other senior police officers were present at the media meet.

What a royal let-down !

Mangaluru is deprived of many facilities although it is elegible for most. Proposal for a new Passport office is also playing hide & seek & now it is commissionerate. What next? I urge Daiji and like minded medias to take a lead role in making people aware and fight for the need of such things, as it did for International Airport.
